Tedai Seijuro is a main character of "Onatsu Seijuro" arranged into Kabuki and Joruri by Chikamatsu Monzaemon from the original book written by Ihara Saikaku. Even after Meiji era, it remained popular, as arranged into "Onatsu Kyoran" by Tsubouchi Shoyo. The story is a tragedy set in the castletown of Himeji, like a girl called Onatsu, daughter of a rich merchant, and an employee called Seijuro hired by her family fell in love and ran away together, but they got caught, and Seijuro was cut off his neck as a punishment of kidnapping and on suspicion of taking a big money. This artwork is created by Toyokuni III, master of actor painting.

Utagawa Kunisada (1786 - 1865) (also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III) was the most popular, prolific and financially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.
