This artwork is inspired by Ryutei Tanehiko's five volumes of "Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji". The scene where Hikaru and Tasogare are rushing to an old temple in Nonaka is the most famous part in Inakagenji. Yoshitoshi colored the background in the vertically long screen only with gradation of sumi and indigo blue, to contrast the lovers tightly holding each other as rushing in the rain. A little cuckoo crying across the night sky with a moon halfly hidden behind the clouds effectively makes an emotional scene. This artwork used to be forbidden to expose because of disordering public. Created in 1885.
Good condition, color and impression
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi(1839-1892) was an artist of Japanese paintings, taught by Ichiyusai or Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
He created modern ukiyo-e depicting warriors, actors and beauties and many sensational pieces. Since circa 1873, he created art pieces with unique drawing techniques based on timely topics.
His drawing technique depicting a moving motion as a stop motion can also be found in modern Manga cartoons, thus some people call him as a pioneering cartoonist.
