Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915) has become one of the most remarkable woodblock artists in the Meiji Period. Kobayashi's works were conspicuous figure with quiet colors.
The image is depicting the Sumidagawa (Sumida river) from the zashiki (Japanese-style room) with biwa (Japanese lute). The season of this work is summer, and the heavy thunderhead can be seen in the far distance implying the rain stopped a minute ago. The scene creates the refreshing air after rain.
The series title Musashi Hyakkei (Musashi Hundred Views)is in the red rectangular cartouche to the upper left and the title of the image Sumidagawa Suijinmori is in the yellowish square cartouche next to it. The publisher information is given on the left margin.
