Utagawa Hirokage was an ukiyo-e artist who was taught by Hiroshige I. He created the humorous ukiyo-e series, “Edo meisho Doukeduzukushi (Laughable scenes of famous landscapes in Edo)”.
Sukiya Bashi bridge connected the Daimyo’s residents surrounded by ditches and commoners’ houses. In the Edo period, Sukiyabashi area in Ginza was called as a district of the lagoon. In this ukiyo-e, two men fighting and making a big fuss are depicted. At the back of one man being thrown by the other man, there is a green Kappa (a river imp) humorously standing which creates the funny contrast in this scene.
Good impression and color Very small stains on the artwork
