Kawanabe Kyosai(1831-1889) was a pupil of the printmaker Utagawa Kuniyoshi. The paintings and print subjects of Kyosai are from traditional to bizarre and fantastic. He was incredibly imaginative and created designs that have no relations to any known art works of any other Japanese or Western artists.
Many of his designs are comic, satiric, humorous and sketchy. Others are strange, weird and frightening.
The title of this book is " Kyosai Hyakuzu One Hundred Pictures of Kyosai"
Using the tradition of Yokai(Japanese monster) art of drawing and paintings, the living peculiar to Meiji period(1868-1912) is vividly drawn in satiric pictures. The satire also seems to corresponding with the world in those days.
Double door book , fifty sections ,woodblock prints. Good impression and color. The cover is slightly worn and soiled ,and has some notes (numbers) from the previous owner.
