Matsubayashi Keigetsu (1876-1963) was a top “ nanga” artist of the 20th century. Nanga is an abbreviation of “ nansouga”, which refers to painting of the “Southern School” in China. Nanga is often used synonymously with “bunjinga” to describe the painting (basically water ink painting) inspired by Chinese literati painting that flourished in Japan during the 18c and 19c. Although nanga used to be considered as one of the main genre of the Japanese fine arts, as the time passed, the population with clear understandings of traditional nanga decreased.
Here, Keigetsu who especially liked autumn among Japanese four seasons depicted autumn flowers gracefully bloomed in desolate field.
The Chinese poem written in this artwork reveals his strong feelings towards nanga, and this stirs viewers’ imagination.
This is said to be a precious and passionate piece created by the last Nanga artist when he was in his seventies.
The poem is shown at the right side of the piece and the artist's signature and his seal are below it.
There is "Tomobako" which is an autograph or note of authentication written on a box containing an art work on the back of the lid of this scroll box.
