Kikuchi Keigetsu (1879-1955) was born in Nagano prefecture with the given name Kikuchi Kanji. He traveled in Europe during the twenties with two of his art colleagues. Back in Japan he became a teacher of Japanese print art at the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts and at the Kyoto City School of Painting. His favorite subjects were Bijin-ga - images of beautiful women. In 1934 he was honored by being appointed a member of the Imperial Art Board and in 1937 as a member of the Imperial Art Academy.
Keigetsu created a lot of elegant and gourgeous historical paintings based on Yamato-e (Japanese paintings) and Ukiyo-e. This artwork was created in Taisho 5 (1916) and belongs to Bijin-ga genre of Yamatoe-style. A beauty from the Heian period (794 -1185) in the Jyuni-hitoe or twelve-layered-robe is depicted in this artwork.
A Heian beauty depicted here may be looking at the scene of early spring in the cold weather through the misu bamboo cartain. Hands rubbing under the sleeves of her robe and the hair slightly moving by her breath depicted here conveys the feelings of the cold air to the viewers.
Dainty light colors and silver tin paint used for this artwork give gourgeous and modern feelings. In addition, Keigetsu's fine touch of the drawing lines depicting her hair and layers of her robe make the lady look very elegant.
