Although Kawase Hasui is well-known for landscape woodblock prints, he also created some portraits by woodblock prints from his early times as an artist.
This artwork depicts Nakamura Utaemon VI (1917 - 2001) acting as Yukihime (Snow Princess) in the Kabuki titled "Kinkakuji". Utaemon VI is famous for a great female impersonator called Oyama. Yukihime is one of the three most successful Kabuki princess characters.
The printmaker, Ono Gitaro's seal which rarely be seen on the artwork is applied on this. This rare seal implies that this ukiyo-e was created for some kind of special occasions or commemorations. This artwork was created in 1951.
