Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) was a Japanese woodblock printmaker. Known for his exquisite landscape prints, Kawase Hasui was one of the most talented Shin Hanga (new print) artists of the early 20th century.
During the war time(1944,19 in showa era), Hasui who is the artist of this work evacuated from his hometown to countryside. Meanwhile,Hasui often went around Tokyo and kept sketching.
Mizuki is a sea coast town. Against the background of gray sky and gloomy houses, shadow who might be parent and child emphasizes the wretched situation at that time.
The title of this work Mizuki no Kumoribi (Cloudy Day at Mizuki ) and the production date are shown on the left margin. The artist signature Hasui are on the bottom left corner of the image.
