Utagawa Kunisada (1786 – 1864) taught by Utagawa Toyokuni became famous for drawing noble beauties and lively actors. He acquired great fame as an artist when he started to depict round shouldered and shot necked beauties around 1830. He is known as a prolific artist.
There is a signature and a seal of Gototei Kunisada on the artwork that indicate this as one of his early age pieces between 1804 and 1830. It is said that Kunisada created many of his greatest works during this period. Impressive standing figure of the beauty is expressed by elaborate and delicate drawing and printing techniques.
Here is one piece of the series "Kagai (a Japanese courtesan and geisha district) Mondou (dialogue)".
This printing is beautifully structured together with the color of water fully put on the tub and light green color of the prostitute's kimono . Also, the hanao (Japanese sandal strap) is painted in light blue to harmony with this structure, and it shows artist's attentive over the detail.
The series title Kagai mondou is shown in the upper right in the image. The artist signature and his seal are to the lower right of the image.
