Utagawa Kunisada (1786 - 1864), who was taught by Utagawa Toyokuni, gained a great fame for creating ukiyo-e depicting noble beauties and lively actors. He became popular when he started to paint round backed and short necked beauties after circa 1830. He is also known as a prolific artist.
There is a rakkan (artist's signature and seal) of Gototei Kunisada on this artwork, which indicates this is one of his early pieces between 1804 and 1830. Natural colors were used for this piece while imported bright red and blue pigments were applied to his ukiyo-e after this period. The soft colors of this piece such as the vermilion found in the Kanoko pattern (white-spotted pattern) Kimono are beautiful.
Kunisada depicted the subtleties of the female elegance through the a beautiful Oiran courtesan giving a sidelong glance and this is one of his best masterpieces.
Many of Kunisada's artworks still exist at present. Izumu Kyoka adored the elegant figures of Kunisada's beauties which gave a strong impact in peoples' mind even after the Meiji era and he called them as "One-e-sama" (Dear elder sisters) with intimacy. Kyoka probably missed and yearned for the beauties with the atomsphere of the Edo era.
