"The Tales of Genji" is so deeply rooted in the Japanese culture and still gives significant influence in Japanese people's lifestyle beyond the realm of classical literature. Such popular story was often depicted on Byobu screens for bridal furnishings and those screens were much prized.

"The Tales of Genji" is composed of 54 volumes and its each volume has individual name. With this pair of screens, stories of autumn (vol.7 Momijino-ga) and winter (vol.20 Asagao or Morning glory) are depicted in the right and left panel respectively.

In the Momijinoga panel, the scene where Hikaru-genji and the other dancer dancing in a pair in front of the Emperor Suzaku on his visit to the Ise shrine is depicted.

In the Asagao panel, the scene where Hikaru Genji was talking to his wife, Murasaki-no-ue, about old good times at their rendezvous while they were looking at little girls playing is depicted. Little girls struggling to move the snowball made too big to move are comically and daintily depicted.

Gold foils were impressed on both panels thus making them look really gorgeous and rather bright color is used of the floating water. Such gorgeous scenes of the Tales of Genji were the most favorite painting themes for the court sponsored Tosa School. They must have been the most suitable items for bridal furnishings at that time.
