Kano Naganobu or Isen-in (1775-1828) was the 8th head artist of the Kobikicho Kano family and he directed works comissioned directly by Shogun. The head of the Kobikicho Kano family was actually the top artist in Japan at that time.

"Rokkasen" or six immortal poets such as Ariwarano-narihira holding a bow, Onono Komachi (one of the most beautiful women at that time), Soujyo Henjyo (a famous priest), Funyano Yasushide wearing a white clothes and Otomono Kuronushi wearing a green clothes are depicted in this artwork. With traditional Yamato-e, they had been depicted as objects for worship, then they became objects for portraits in Yamatoe-style Kakejiku scrolls in the Edo period. They are created as a typical triptych: trees and plants are depicted in the left and right scroll and portraits are depicted in the middle. The uniqueness of this set is that all 6 “Rokkasen”, not an individual poet, are depicted in one scroll.

Isen-in was good at miniature painting as well as simple and elegant ink painting. This triptych well reflects those two different characteristics of Isen-in’s artworks. Especially with 6 immortal poets, his detailed and careful painting style can be found. This set of scrolls is an excellent artwork of Isen-in which shows his outstanding painting skills to cater any kind of request from his clients as well as his personality and charm.
