Kishi Renzan (1805-1859) was a painter who lived in Kyoto. He was a pupil of his father-in-law Ganku by whom he was adopted, and he belonged to Kishi School which was well-known school in Kyoto. He specialized in landscapes and nature (kacho-ga) paintings.

Motif of birds (especially, peacock) was repeatedly used by Kishi school students such as Renzan, Ganku, and Gantai .
Detailed description of the feather using gold lines and speckled skin of the birds show Kishi school's tactful painting skill.

Shown here, the painting skill of Kishi school nicely adopted by Renzan. Particularly, to the part of the hawk's feet strong brush strokes are used. Also, the lightening color of the bark of a pine tree and each line of the leaves stand out Renzan's paint technique.

Renzan admirably used a proper way for showing a brave figure of a hawk in this work.

The artist signature "Renzan-Gantoku" and his seal are shown to the bottom right of the painting.
