This is one of the series of HiroshigeT’s “100 Famous Views of Edo” that consists of 109 pieces. Seasonal scenery of early spring including pine tree branches, hagoita or battledores, flying kites is depicted. The stone wall and the moat of the Edo castle, samurai warriors’ houses in outer Sakurada and mount Fuji in a distance can also be seen in this artwork. This series was created in 1857 (Ansei 4). The outer margin is cut off with this artwork; therefore there is no aratame-in approval seal. When Hiroshige was continuing publication of this series, he was struck down with a serious illness and past away in the following year in 1858. This series is one of his masterpieces.
Rectangular cartouches to the upper right corner is giving the series title of this work Meisho Edo Hyakkei (100 Famous Views of Edo) and the title Yamashita-cho Hibiya gai Sakurada (Yamashita-cho and Hibiya Outer Sakurada) is next to it. The artist signature Hiroshige is on the bottom right corner of the image.
