Tsukioka Yoshitoshi(1839-1892) is widely recognized as the last great master of Ukiyo-e. In addition, he is regarded as one of the form’s greatest innovator and an artist who was almost single handly struggle against the time and techonology for pushing the traditional Japanese woodblock prints to a new level.

This is a work based on the story of a legend of the vanquished demons in Nagano Prefecture.
The depicted here is a one of the scene from the story that Tairano Koremochi who went for a hunt realized that a woman who invited him to drink Sake was actually a demon, and he tried to vanquish her.

Strong wind which scatter colored leaves and fluttering woman's garment are dramatically depicted.

Also, in this work Yoshitoshi skillfully used visual technique which reflecting eyes of the woman and Koremochi on the water surface reach to the demon's face.

This work strongly attracts viewers into the drama and it is said to be one of his impressive, marvellous works.

To the upper left of the image the title of this work Taira no Koremochi Togakushiyama Kijo Taijinozu (Taira no Koremochi Vanquished Demon Woman at Togakushiyama Maountain) is shown. The artist's signature Yoshitoshi and his seal are shown to the bottom right of the image.
