Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) also sometimes referred to as "Andō Hiroshige" was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, and one of the last great artists in that tradition. He was known especially for his landscape prints and transmuted everyday landscapes into intimate, lyrical scenes that made him even more successful than his contemporary, Hokusai .

He is noted for using unusual vantage points, seasonal allusions, and striking colors. He adapted Western principles of perspective.

This is one of the series of " Gojusan Tsugi Meisho Zue " (The series of The Fifty-three Famous Places of Tokaido; a set of fifty five pieces) which were created when Hiroshige was 59 years old. In this series, Tate-e style (the way of a paper use for oblong) is used and the style is also called "Tate-e Tokaido" .

At the red cartouche to the upper right, the series title and the number of the series "24" are given. At the yellow cartouche to the next to it, the title of this work " Shimada Ooigawa(River) Shungan " which is the name of this depicted landscape is shown.

In the river, some are riding on the men's shoulders, the others are using support or baskets so as to cross the river.

To the lower left of the image, there is an artist's signature Hiroshige. Above and below the signature, the production date Ansei 2 (1855) and publisher information Tsutaya Kichizo with kaiin (changing seal) of July are shown.
