A flock of cranes flying in front of Mt.Fuji standing with dignity. The composition with animals or birds taking dynamic action placed left to right or up to down across the screen is Ryushi’s favorite one, and used in this painting as well. Such bold plain composition consisted of realism and Rin-school-like decoration could have been invented only by him who could exactly grasp the subject by his elaborate sketch. This is an excellent painting appropriate for New Year.
Kawabata Ryushi (1885-1966) was a Nihonga painter from Wakayama, who had a strong personality to make a big wave in the Japanese art world. Without sticking to customs, he produced a lot of big-scale lively artworks.
