This is a figure of beauty who is looking at herself in the mirror and it was drawn with dark coloration. This work is said to be an initial ukiyo-e print in the 17th century following up Iwasa Matabei's style.
Mysterious beauty's image with long wavy hair depicted here by Mitate nicely reproduces Matabei's painting mood which is known for the thick and bodily expression.
Kawabe Mitate (1838-1905) who is an artist of this work was born in Kyushu and made his name as a Tosa painter. He specialized in paintings of both genre (fuzokuga) and graceful world, and unique mood with abundance of his character is clearly shown in this work.
Incidently, in Japanese painting, following a master's style like Mitate did here is not negative, and it is considered as just a natural way.
Painted on silk, the artist's signature and his seal are shown at the bottom left side of the image.
This scroll comes with its original box.
