Ohara Shoson (Koson, Hoson)(1877-1945) created this work and along with being taught by Fenollosa, he had studied painting as a student of Suzuki Koson.
His autograph paintings were popular, but he began to create wood block prints since 1910 as one of the main artists such as Kawase Hasui and Ito Shinsui.
Since he got high appraisal from overseas from the beginning, most of those works flowed out of the country. In 2001, he held a solo exhibition at the RIJKS Museum as the sole Japanese artist.
This is a scene that depicted Noh play "Yuya" which is the title of this work and the name of the main character of this play, a heroine in the Heian period.
Here, Yuya who is wearing a Noh-mask is reading the letter written by her sick mother left in her hometown. Melancholy facial expression of Noh-mask nicelly indicates Yuya's feeling.
The story of this play expands into the scene that Yuya's boyfriend takes her out to cherry blossom viewing to encourage her, and light pink colored her kimono seems to suggest this story's image.
The artist's signature and his seal are shown at the lower right of the image.
There is "Tomobako" which is an autograph or note of authentication written on a box containing an art work on the back of the lid of this scroll box.
