Utagawa Kunisada (1786 - 1865) also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III was the most popular, prolific and financially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan . In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.
This artwork was created as a trypych titled "Umegahana" (The Field of Plum Blossoms).
There is a rakkan (artist's signature and seal) of Kochorou Toyokuni and the title name is written in the red box in the right top.
Although the centre piece has different ga-go (artist's name), all of three prints were designed by Toyokuni III (Utagawa Kunisada).
At the back of the tree depicted by black bold brush lines, colourful plum blossoms and beautiful ladies' kimono can be found.
It is interesting to see the contrast between the strong beauty of the plum blossom and delicate elegance of the ladies' kimono and her dainty figure.
Considering the fact that the lady depicted here is wearing a butterfly pattern kimono, it can be guessed that this artwork is a mitate-e or a parody picture of the Japanese classics such as The Tale of Genji.
There are many other artworks created based on the inspiration of several stories from classics around this time.
