Nishimura Goun (1877-1938) was born in Kyoto. His real name was Genjiro. He was taught by Kishi Chikudo and Takeuchi Seiho. He worked as a teacher for traditional Japanese painting at the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. His favorite subjects were natural life themes and actor scenes. He also did woodblock prints, contributing to the Taisho series The Complete Works of Chikamatsu. He was a jury of Teiten, a member of Teikoku Bijyutu-in/ Geijyutu-in (Japan Art Academy).
Goun is well-known for his witty landscape paintings. The influence of his mentor Takeuchi Seiho can be seen in his artworks. While Seiho tried to create minimal forms in his artworks Goun pursuit simple but detailed and elegant painting style. In this artwork, Goun’s typical painting style can be seen: lively description of objects with their shapes and colors and their variations including bold Indian ink lines, sharp forms, detailed paintings. Several kinds of colorful autumn flowers are depicted here using his wide-ranged skilles.
