Kobayashi Ikuhide was one of the representative ukiyoe artists of the Meiji era. He was taught by Ochiai Yoshiiku(1833-1904) who made a revolution in this field by creating Shinbun Ukiyoe or Newspaper Ukiyoe. Ikuhide was very active mainly in the 1880's and 90's and he is well known for his use of vivid colors, lively personal description and depiction of the fusion of western and traditional Edo culture at that time.

Cherry blossom in Nakano-cho is the spring feature of Yuukaku (red-light district) in Yoshiwara.

This cherry tree used to be re-planted every year in the Edo period and was a symbol of the world of yuujo courtesans who entertained many male customers in Yoshiwara.

The Edo era ended and 20 years had passed when this artwork was created. From looking at this artwork, we
realize that the cherry tree in Yoshiwara, which used to be in a detached world from the people's daily life, became common people's well-known place.

Looking at people depicted in this artwork, the remain of the Edo culture such as Oiran courtesan in gorgeous kimono and westernized people such as women in western dress are beautifully blended together. The cherry blossom in the gas light is beautiful as well as that in the moon light.
