Yamada Kaido (1870-1924) was a Nan-ga painer who was born in Fukui and moved to Kyoto. He studied under famous artists including Tanomura Chokunyuu and Tomioka Tessai.
In 1921, he participated in the foundation of Nihon Nan-ga In and was awarded many prizes at Bun-ten.
He is one of the three authorities of the Kyoto's art world.
The Chinese poem written in this artwork means: I visited to an old hermit who lives in a humble retreat near the water. The retreat is in the shade of the clouds in the sky.
This artwork shows the quintessence of the Nan-ga paintings which has long tradition.
The skillfully drawn zig-zag diagonal lines of the mountains lead the viewers' eyes to follow them from its bottom to upwards and the fresh blue and green colors are very impressive.
Blank white space in this artwork sometimes represents water and sometimes thick clouds.
This kakejiku scroll is large sized item which invites the viewers into the fantasy world of san-sui-ga where the noble-minded hermit lives.
Slight stains on the entire image part
