Kano Akinobu (1636-1713) is the painter of hatsuboku (splashed ink) landscape and belonged to the Kano school. His arbitrary character fostered production of peculiar artworks.
Kano applied Kano painting-style for only outlines, but rich colored akikusazu (flower plants of autumn) indicates the influence of the Nanpin School which is a group of artists who produced bird-and-flower painting introduced to Japan by the Chinese artist Shen Nanpin.
Various kinds of butterflies including moths that flocked towards flowers are depicted here. These somewhat mysterious triptych paintings nicely suggest his unique painting style.
This is an artwork created later than 1814 when he changed his Rakkan (an article’s signature and seal), that was a change of Chinese character of his last name though a reading was the same.
