According to the inscription engraved on the small pillar in right above saying "Kinegawa Zutsumi", this artwork might be expressing a scene of kabuki called "Kasane" or "Iromoyou Chotto Karimame".
A woman called Kasane fell in love with her enemy without knowing it, but finally she realized the fact at the bank of Kinegawa. Her clothes are so gorgeous, but the shadows near them and willow drawn on the front cloth give somehow a scary impression.
