Uda Tekison (1896-1980) was born in Kyoto. His given name is Zenjiro. He studied under Nakamura Sashu who is from his hometown and later moved to Kyoto to study under Kikuchi Houbun of the Shijyo School. After Houbun's death, he was taught by Kikuchi Keigetsu. He was awarded Teiten Special Prize and Teikoku Bijyutsu-in Prize and became committee member and jury of Teiten when he was only 32 years old. He also became an executive member of Nitten and a head of his own private painting school Hakushin-sha. He painted a lot of landscape paintings depicting Kyoto area while introducing innovative painting techniques and achieving renovation of post-war Kyoto’s painting circle.

In this artwork, closed-up trunk and bold composition are expressing the strong lively pine tree. Bright colors, Tarashikomi technique (a painting technique in which pale black ink sumi or a color (including gold or silver) is brushed onto an area of a painting, and then, either darker sumi or the same or a contrasting color is dropped into the first before it has completely dried, creating an effect of pooled colors with softly blurred edges.) and gofun pigment (gofun is made of calcium carbonate powder obtained by heating and pulverizing the shells of oysters and clams) are applied very effectively with this artwork.

Common features in composition and techniques of post-war innovative artists including Fukuda Heihachiro and him can be found here.

Tekison was very keen on painting traditional theme and motifs and created a lot of artworks related to Kyoto while he tried to introduce new techniques to his artworks with an aim to regenerate Kyoto’s painting circle. This painting is one of his best artworks in which his strong will and eagerness for revitalization of tradition through introduction of new painting techniques can be seen.
