Watanabe Seitei (1851-1918) was born in Tokyo and studied under Kikuchi Yousai. He gained a big fame for his designs exhibited at expositions in Japan and abroad. He studied western fine arts when he went to the expo in Paris and he created flower-and-bird paintings with some western flavor by refined brush works. He studied Shibara Zeshin's painting style and created wide ranged artworks including designs for cloisonné, wood block prints and illustrations for magazines. He became famous for his controversial illustration of nude with Yamada Bimyou’s novel titled “Ko-chou (Butterfly)”.
Various autumn flowers are depicted by elegant and smooth brush works in this artwork. Vines are spontaneously stretching out in the white background and white dianthus flowers look very beautiful. Seitei’s artworks provide the warm and simple atmosphere as well as modern feelings like art nouveau. Since Seitei studied under Kikuchi Yousai who was famous for portraits, he had to study how to paint flowers, birds and plants by himself when he designed crafts to export to Western countries. His own unique skills and styles free from the established schools’ tradition and innovative mind to adopt western sense of beauty can be seen in this work.
