Komura Settai (1887-1940) was very active in the Meiji, Taisho and Showa era. He gained his popularity from bijin-ga (paintings of beauties), book design, illustrations and theatrical design. In particular, he created many book designs and illustrations for Izumi Kyoka’s novels and illustrations.
In this artwork, willow branches before the appearance of new leaves, stream of the river in deep blue and Mount Tsukuba in the distance. This very simple composition conveys cold feelings of winter. This is designed as Uchiwa-e or Fan print; therefore, the image is printed in a round shape not rectangular shape. Cold winter scenes are often depicted in Uchiwa-e prints so that the users can visually feel cool feelings as well.
