Yoshida Hiroshi (1876 – 1950) was a painter of western style oil paintings. His artistic talent was spotted by Yoshida Kasaburou, then he was taught by Koyama Shoutarou after he moved to Tokyo.
He is known as one of the most prominent modern style woodblock print artists together with Kawase Hasui and Itou Shinsui.
He created approximately 250 artworks with an unconventional touch.
He is also known as a member of Bunten (Monbusho Exhibition), Teiten (Teikoku Bijyutuin Exhibition) and Taiheiyougakai (Taiheiyou Art Club).
This artwork depicts auspicious motifs: a tiger and a crane with the lake in the background. The combination of a tiger and cranes depicted in the Japanese paintings is very rare. Tigers represent a god of well-being of the family and cranes represent a god of longevity.
This is a rare piece depicting a tiger casting a firece glance and cranes dancing with fear and craze.
Although Yoshida Hiroshi is well-known as a water color painter and woodblock printmaker, this artwork depicting graceful dancing cranes shows his exceled skills in Japanese style paintings.
