Tsukioka Yoshitoshi(1839-1892) is widely recognized as the last great master of Ukiyo-e. In addition, he is regarded as one of the form’s greatest innovator and an artist who was almost single handly struggle against the time and techonology for pushing the traditional Japanese woodblock prints to a new level.
Here, a woman seems to be concentrating on reading a book. Her serious look, slightly opened lip, and loose hair down from her temple are very attractive.
A trace of color in her cheeks suggests that she might have just got out of the bath. Also, a sleeping cat which curls up in front of the woman is lovely.
This work is one of the work pieces of series which drew half-length women's genre between Kasei era and Meiji era (1789-1912). The title "Attakaso" indicates a scene which looks warm.
Most of bijin (a beautiful woman) depicted by Yoshitoshi are said to be firm characters, but from this piece a woman's private life style can be glancingly seen.
The series title "Fuzoku Sanjyu-Sanso" is at the pink rectangular cartouche at the upper right, and the title of this work is shown next to the series title.
There are the artist's signature and his seal at the middle left side of the image. This was created in Meiji 21 (1888).
