Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a wonderful Japanese artist and master that devoted his life to the creation of beautiful paintings, as well as teaching students the Ukiyo-e style. He was taught ukiyo-e by Utagawa Toyohiro who was one of the most popular Ukiyo-e artists.

Hiroshige was one of the peer pupils of Utagawa Toyohiro. His pictures of famous landscapes with highly developed composition in perspective and in clear scenographical contrast are highly rated overseas.

His representative works are "Tokaido Gojyu San Tsugi (53 stations of the Tokaido)", "Touto Meisho (Famous Views of Edo)", "Meisho Edo Hyakkei (Famous 100 views of Edo)"."Famous 100 views of Edo" is well known for the fact that Vincent Van Gogh reproduced the prints.

The Kisokaido series of prints was a collaboration between Hiroshige and Keisei Eisen who produced twenty-three of the seventy prints. This is a set of 70 with no censor's seals. The first half of this series are mainly created by Keisai Eisen and the latter half by Hiroshige.

Although this series is not as well-known as Tokaido Gojyu San Tsugi, there are some excellent prints.

This artwork spontaneously depicts a big pine tree in the center and a bridge and travellers in the distance. The full moon on the river, with travellers crossing a trestle-bridge and mountains looming through the mist beyond. On the near bank, children playing with dogs and a man leading a horse, on the cloth of which is the publisher's mark, a great tree and a house with bamboos to right. The depiction of the part of the full moon behind the pine tree is a typical of Hiroshige's style. In the centre of the picture is the Wada Bridge across the Yoda River.

Signed, Hiroshige with a seal Ichiryusai in the left below

The title "Kisokaido Rokujyu-Kyu-Tsugi no uchi Nagakubo" is written in the upper left with the seals of Kinjudo and plate number "28"

Slight folds and stains
