Kobayashi Kiyochika(1847-1915) has become one of the most remarkable woodblock artists in the Meiji Period as he released "The Tokyo Land-scape",the masterpiece that he called "light picture" woodblock print on paper and which reflect the transformations of modernity.
In the snow, Japanese army attacks the battery of the shin country army. The soldier of the shin country flies up by the bombardment, and the battery is destroyed. The feature in this work is an expression of "Light". The flash of the bombardment that shines in ikaiei at night suddenly is expressed contrasting it with dark air that surrounds it. The aim of Kiyochika that tries to express the atmosphere of a dramatic battle by comparing light and shade is possible to know.
At the same time, This work plays the role to visually tell people military results of a Japanese army, and can catch a glimpse of the relic of "Newspaper color print" that became popular at the beginning of the Meiji era.
Good impression and colors
