Torii Kotondo established a pure, healthy, original beautiful woman style of painting while succeeding to the tradition of the ukiyoe. The female figure which has a fan single-handed, look down diagonally. It expresses the beauty of a traditional Japanese woman. Moreover, a cool impression is given to the spectator by the light blue distributed in the background.

Torii Kotondo (1900-1976) is a famous painter of Shibai-e. He became a pupil of Kaburagi Kiyokata in 1918. In 1941, taking over his father, Torii VII, Kotondo took the name of Torii VIII. He worked on not only Kabuki-e which the Torii had mainly been handling, but also Japanese beauties as a pupil of Kaburagi Kiyokata that made his family's name known more widely.
