Kobayashi Kiyochika(1847-1915) has become one of the most remarkable woodblock artists in the Meiji Period as he released "The Tokyo Land-scape",the masterpiece that he called "light picture" woodblock print on paper and which reflect the transformations of modernity.
Intense gun battle.
The appearance of a Japanese army that advances toward the front where the bullet flits is bravely drawn. The ukiyoe of Kiyochika skillfully expressed a slight expression of the atmosphere such as the light at night in daybreak and the evening. It makes a clear distinction with an ukiyoe at that time. Moreover, a style of painting that excels and is new is shown.
The afterimage of the flitting bullet and the weather are skillfully expressed, and we can understand a slight aesthetic sense of Kiyochika in this artwork.
At the same time, This artwork plays the role to visually tell people military results of a Japanese army, and can catch a glimpse of the relic of "Newspaper color print" that became popular at the beginning of the Meiji era.
Good impression and colors
