Pair of two-panels folding screen, ink and light colors on paper
signed and sealed

It is estimated that Kikuchi Yosai, the executor of this folding screen, chose the subject matter such as Shizuka Gozen and Iganotsubone from his great book, ‘Zenkenkojitsu’. As can be seen from the woman’s long hair and the scenery under the moonlight, each painting is boldly and skillfully executed with the light colors and the abbreviated brushing stroke. ‘Zenkenkojitsu’ exercised a great influence on the artists in the Meiji period such as Watanabe Seitei, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Mizuno Toshikata. Simply depicted portrait, which can be seen in this artwork, is typical characteristic of the early Meiji period art. Here, we can say that the fluent depiction by the ink proves the greatness of Kikuchi Yosai, the pioneer of the modern Japanese historical painting.
