Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1862) He was born in Nihonbashi in Tokyo. His family ran a silk-dyer. When he was 15 years old, he became the pupil of Utagawa Toyokuni I. After several years, he came to be extremely famous for ukiyo-e of Samurai warriors. Also, during 1830-40, he won himself fame for caricatures which impersonated animals and plants.
This ukiyo-e is one of the ten series of beauties who wear Benkei-patterned kimonos. Those beauties are likened to the women who appear in the famous episodes of Benkei. Benkei is a warrior monk who served Minamoto Yoshitsune in the latter half of the 12th century. In this ukiyo-e, a comic tanka, which is based on a story of Yoshitune, is written beside the woman.
Good impression, colors and condition.
