This print depicts the battle at Chihaya castle, an episode of Taihe-ki story of the late turbulent Kamakura period. Kusunoki Masashige repels Shogunate forces with faking a numerous army with straw men, guerrilla warfare and shooting arrows and stoning to the enemy lines climbing the cliff. The battle led the fall of Kamakura Shogunate later.
The Shogunate soldiers bombarded with Masashige's traps are impressive.

Issen Yoshikazu (birth and death date unknown) was a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. His active time was from 1848 to 1854. He is also referred to as Utagawa Yoshikazu.
