Probably the background was drawn by Kunihisa, and the figure of Hikaru Genji by Kunisada. This is one of so-called Genji-e (paintings based on The Tale of Genji story). Ukihune, a scene of Hakkei from Genji, was chosen as the subject of this piece.

Backing, small holes

Utagawa Kunisada (1786 - 1864), who was taught by Utagawa Toyokuni, gained a great fame for creating ukiyo-e depicting noble beauties and lively actors. He became popular when he started to paint round backed and short necked beauties after circa 1830. He is also known as a prolific artist.

Utagawa Kunihisa is known as a student of Toyokuni. However there is no other information about him (or her, according to a theory). He left many paintings of Beauty.
