This is an ukiyo-e in style of “Uchiwa-e”. Uchiwa-e is a print based on a brocade picture by ukiyoe painters and printed after cutting it out in form of fan (Uchiwa, Ogi). Most of those were pasted on a bamboo frame to make a real fan. Since Uchiwa-e was worn out by usage, extant items were few and precious. The theme is actors. From the play, the main character, Issun Tokubei, and Okaji were depicted. Their pose is humorous.
Many worm holes and a browning in the left
Utagawa Kunisada (1786 - 1865) (also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III) was the most popular, prolific and financially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.
