Here depicted is the scene from Battle of Kokai (Sep.17, 1894) in Sino-Japanese War. In this battle, the Japanese combined fleet sank five cruisers of Qing’s Beiyang Fleet by its quick attack. One of the cruisers sunk is the one in this artwork. The Chinese soldier ran away one after another from the cruiser making fire by boat. In this consequence, Qing’s Navy suffered serious damages and lost the mastery of the sea.
Baido Kokunimasa (=Utagawa Kunimasa V) (birth date and death date unknown) was an Ukiyoe painter in Meiji period. He called himself Baido Kokunimasa from 1889 to 1896.
Triptych connected and pasted on paperboard. Slightly toned.
