This is an artwork of Nobukazu who was active in 1887 to 1897 and produced the brocade pictures about war such as Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War. In this artwork depicted is the Battle of Lüshunkou in the Sino-Japanese War, with the Japanese Army attacking from the sea while the Chinese Army from the land. The waves seem to express the excitement of the both army's soldiers, and a Chinese soldier blown backward hit by the Japanese Army's bullet adds a reality. The Japanese soldiers are leaning forward, that suggests Japan's victory.
Triptych connected and pasted on paperboard. Good color, slightly foxed.
Yosai Nobukazu (1872-1944) was an Ukiyoe Painter in the Meiji period.
