This is an artwork of Kiyochika who was called 'Hiroshige of Meiji", describing a scene from the Treaty of Shimonoseki.
Kiyochika left the articles and illustrations about Shimonoseki War over the period from 1863 to 1864, imitating the style of brocade pictures in newspaper. In the right of the screen a Chinese representative is sitting in front of the hanging scroll of Sansui, while in the left a Japanese representative is in front of the golden holding screen, both look tense waiting for the conclusion of the treaty. Kiyochika learned from Shibata Zeshin and Kawanabe Kyosai, and also from Wargman for oil painting. So he left a lot of illustrations for newspaper and magazine, apart from cartoons.

Triptych connected and pasted on paperboard. A small tear in the lower right-hand corner, slightly stained and creased.

Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847 – 1915) was a woodblock print artist.

His childhood name was Katsunosuke.
He studied oil paintings and Japanese paintings under British painter, Charles Wirgman and Kawanabe Gyousai and Shibata Zeshin respectively.

Kiyochika started his career as an ukiyo-e artist. Light and shadow are beautifully depicted in his artworks.
Gorgeous sunsets, brilliant sunrises, soft lights illuminated along the river depicted in his works deeply touch the viewer’s heart.
He gained his fame when he created a new genre of western style woodblock paints called “Kousen-ga” which employs new techniques to express light and shade.

He is also well known for sarcastic multi-color printed cartoon series (Nishiki-e Manga) called “Kiyochika Ponchi”.
