This belongs to a series of Bijin-ga (Beauty) depicted a woman who wants to do something. The woman’s facial expression and physical look are elaborately depicted and regarded as his one of representative series of Bijin-ga as well as his ‘Fuzoku Thirty-two aspects’ in his later years. In this print depicted is a woman looking at the snow through the window, about to putting on her thick kimono to protect from the outside coldeness. This is an Ukiyo-e in style called Chirimen-e, which applies a particular procession onto the paper after putting the print on in order to give a cotton-like texture.
A tiny hole on the upper center.
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi(1839-1892) was an artist of Japanese paintings, taught by Ichiyusai or Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
He created modern ukiyo-e depicting warriors, actors and beauties and many sensational pieces. Since circa 1873, he created art pieces with unique drawing techniques based on timely topics.
His drawing technique depicting a moving motion as a stop motion can also be found in modern Manga cartoons, thus some people call him as a pioneering cartoonist.
