Toyokuni III (=Kunisada I), “Minazuki (June), from Annual Event of Wakamurasaki”
This is considered a series of annual events of a year. Here depicted is a scene from June. Hikaru and women are enjoying the boat under the moon light. This is a kind of Genji-e inspired by “Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji”, a parody of The Tale of Genji. From the scene, this artwork seems to be after the chapter “Ukifune (floating boat)”. The color of the pond where carp is swimming and the white full moon creates a cool evening of early Summer.
A fold. Good print and condition.
Utagawa Kunisada (1786 - 1865) (also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III) was the most popular, prolific and financially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.
