The subject of this artwork is Mrs. Garasya, wife of Hosokawa Tadaoki. She was the third daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide, and married Hosokawa Tadaoki accepting Oda Nobunaga's offer. She was christian and enjoying a peaceful marriage life, but one day just before the Battle of Sekigahara began, she was about taken as a hostage by Ishida Mitsunari. Garasya realized and refused to go, but on the next day, Mitsunari took further means to place his followers around her house in order to capture her. Garasya asked her chief retainer to stab her with sward, because in Christianity, killiing onself is regarded as a sin. Garasya's faith was so deep that the Society of Jesus later took her as a heroin in opera.
