Tsukihyakushi is the representative artwork by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. 100 pieces of paintings related to "moon" began to be created in 1885 and completed in the previous year of his death.
The subject of this artwork is Hasegawa Shinren, a loyalist of Prince Mochihito-ou who was son of Emperor Takakura. Mochihito and his followers disguised in female clothes were on the way to run away from Taira No Kiyomori. On the other hand, Shinren was taken away by Kiyomori's followers and tortured but never told the place where Mochihito was. This artwork shows Shinren's faith and fidelity never changed even in such difficutly.
