Hanging scroll, ink and color on silk signed and sealed Tomobako
Ryushi founded “Seiryusya”, art society, against the times when delicate elegant paintings were enthusiastically accepted. His art society also sent out a lot of unique painters such as Ochiai Rofu. Even after Ryushi passed away, they took over Ryushi’s Fauve-like strong color expression. This painting was exposed at an exhibition sponsored by Takashimaya Department Store in 1948. Orchid, symbol of spring, is depicted in the foreground, and a civet is looking here from behind the flower. Long thin leaves of orchid painted thickly and cat’s body emphasized by gradation with Gofun pigment may give an impression rough and wild in its color and touch, but it’s in full of vigorous energy.
Kawabata Ryushi (1885-1966) was a Nihonga painter from Wakayama, who had a strong personality to make a big wave in the Japanese art world. Without sticking to customs, he produced a lot of big-scale lively artworks.
