Here is a brocade picture created in 1889. The subject is Mouri Motonari, warrior of the Sengoku era, and the depiction is referred to a historical episode about him. One day when Motonari was young, he visited the Itsukushima Shinto Shrine. He asked a follower what he wished for, then the follower replied he has wished for Motonari to be a governor of Aki, present Chugoku area. Motonari said, why didn't you wish for me to be a governor of Japan. If you set a goal lower, you will only be able to accomplish something less than the goal. However, as older he was getting, Motonati began to be concerned about how to protect his family name value rather than being a governor.

Good impression, colors and condition.

Inoue Yasuji (1864-1889) was born as a first son of a familiy running a Kimono store in Asakusa. Firstly he learned under Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and then became a pupil of Kobayashi Kiyochika who had created his original Kosenga from existing ukiyoe. Inoue's Gago is Yasuji, Yasuharu, Tankei. However, he was in delicate health and passed away young at the age of 26 in 1889. Sometimes he is highly admired as a gifted painter of premature mortality.
