In the "Aoikusamatsu No Urasono" by Toyohara Kunichika, the "Midaidokoro", Shogun's wife, of Edo Bakufu was depicted over 15 generations. Being protected by Shogun, the "Ooku", at the top of which is Shogun's wife, sometimes had a strong political power. Such Ooku is always referred to when people talk about Edo Bakufu. It seems that the title of "Urasono" meaning backyard is satirizing such Edo Bakufu's dual natures.
The woman depicted in this artwork is Takatsukasa Nobuko, wife of Tsunayoshi, Shogun V. They seem to have been on bad terms because they had never had a child. Nobuko also was on bad terms with Yoshitsune's mother. Although details not known, Nobuko seems to have passed away at the age of 59 within one month after Tsunayoshi's death.
